What We Do

A Toilet That Will Not Flush

Clogged toilet repair in central Vermont is the call people make after the plunger has failed twice. By then the question is not how to clear it but why it clogged, and the answer is usually one of three things. Something in the trap a plunger cannot move, a toilet that has never flushed well, or a main line problem showing up at the lowest fixture first.

The third one matters most. If the toilet backs up when the shower runs, or the tub gurgles when the toilet flushes, the clog is not in the toilet. It is in the line under the house, and plunging pushes sewage somewhere worse. Stop and call.

The rest is a toilet job. A closet auger reaches through the trap for the toy, the wipes, the whatever. If that fails the toilet comes off the floor, the trap and the flange get cleared and inspected, and it goes back on a new wax ring. Barre's older housing has plenty of toilets set on rotted flanges, and that is often the real reason one keeps clogging.

When It Is More Than a Plunger Job

A single clog that plunges out is not a service call. These are.

Worth a call if you have

  • It clogs every week or two with normal use
  • Water rises in the tub or shower when the toilet flushes
  • The toilet gurgles when the sink drains or the washer empties
  • A plunger clears it and it clogs again the same day
  • The bowl fills slowly or the flush is weak even when clear
  • Water seeps around the base after a flush

How It Works

Auger First, Then Pull It

A closet auger goes through the trap first. It reaches the bend a plunger cannot and pulls back whatever is lodged there, and for most single clogs that is the whole job.

If the auger cannot clear it, or the toilet clogs again within days, it comes off the floor. With the toilet off we can see the trap, the flange and the first stretch of drain, which is where wipes pile up and where a flange that has rotted or sits below the floor lets the seal fail. The toilet goes back on a new wax ring, level, and bolted properly.

If the water is coming up somewhere else in the house, the toilet is the messenger and the main line is the job. A cable or a camera down the cleanout finds the real clog, and the toilet stops being the problem.

What Moves the Price

An auger clear is the short version. Pulling and resetting the toilet adds time and a wax ring, and a rotted flange adds a repair. A main line clog is a drain cleaning job priced as one, not a toilet job.

A toilet that clogs every week costs more over a year in plungers and Saturday mornings than a repair does. If the toilet itself is the problem, an older low-flow unit that never flushed well, you get told that, and the choice is yours.

Call and describe what happens when it flushes and whether anything else in the house is affected. You will hear which of the three it is likely to be and what that runs.

Asked Questions

Questions About Clogged Toilet Repair

  • Why does my toilet keep clogging?

Three usual reasons. Something lodged in the trap that a plunger moves but never removes. A toilet that has always flushed weakly, common on early low-flow units. Or a partial clog in the main line that catches everything the toilet sends. The third one shows up as water in the tub when you flush.

  • Are flushable wipes really flushable?

No. They do not break down the way paper does, and they are the most common thing we pull out of toilets and main lines around Barre. Put them in the trash, whatever the package says.

  • Can you fix a toilet that flushes weakly?

Often. A clogged rim jet, a bad flapper or a low tank level all weaken the flush and are simple fixes. Some early low-flow toilets never flushed well, and the fix there is a newer toilet.

  • The toilet backs up when I run the shower. What is that?

A main line clog, not a toilet clog. The toilet is the lowest fixture with the biggest opening, so it is where a backup shows first. Stop using water and call. Plunging pushes sewage into the tub.

  • How long does a clogged toilet repair take?

An auger clear is minutes. Pulling and resetting the toilet is about an hour. A flange repair or a main line clear adds to that, and you will hear which before it starts.

  • Can plunging make it worse?

On a toilet clog, no. On a main line clog, yes, because the pressure pushes the backup into the tub or shower. If anything else in the bathroom gurgles or rises when you plunge, stop.
